Top 10 movies to understand our world.

                                 World is a complicated place. Even though we are a part of it ,we only understand a tiny fraction of it. We only know few people on human history . There may have lots of things missed. So we turn to art and literature to experience these things. Movies are one of perfect medium  or an art form that gives wisdom of our world. Here are some movies that may useful to expand our understanding on our world.

1 - Restrepo

                       This is a documentary that released on 2010 and it is highly under-rated.  It features photographer 'Tim Hetherington' and journalist 'Sebastian Junger' with u.s army platoon in Afghanistan . Special thing about this movie is , it contain shocking real footages on war and it reports the incidents as accurate as possible .

                   93 minutes of eye opening experience teaches us about cruel and harass nature of war and terrorism . It had won several awards including grand jury prize on sundance film festival .                                   

2 - Tora! Tora! Tora.

                            This film was co-directed by  Richard Fleischer, Kinjil Fukasaku and Toshio Madusa. So it is an important work of art that created through the contribution of both American abd Japanese film makers. It is about the attack on pearl harbor during second world war.

                           This film is special because story of Japanese side and Story of American side was separately filmed and merged them later so we can experience a unique event that happened in world history with it's full details and balance political views.

                                                                                                             

3 - Schindler's list

                            This is also a movie about second world war . The heroic story of  German businessman who was a member of Nazi party, Oska schindler . He fought alone to save more than thousand of Jews from holocaust by taking them as this workers. It is a thrue story  that reminds us horrors of war and requirement of humanity .

                              This movie had won over 90 awards including 12 academy awards in 1994. The film was initially released in 1993 as a black and white movie to gives more intense experience . It is considered as bests film directed by Steven Spielberg. And definitely worth watching .

 

4 - City of God.

               This is a shocking movie about Brazilian gangster and underworld life during 1960 to 1980 , including real incidents happened in Rio de Janeiro . This film is adaptation of book by Paulo Lins Published in 1997 that goes by same name. It contains  tragic lifestyle of children and young generation of that time . They were destroyed by drug and organized crimes.

              Fernando Meirelles and katia lund co-directed this movie and was released in 2002 . It had several nominations of academy awards. Film worth watching to know how tragic and cruel the world could be.

 

5 - Apollo 13

            Apart from political , war and crimes we also interested understanding space travels too. There are lots of science fictional movies that have fantastic futuristic space travels but only few accurate representations of it. Apollo 13 is a movie so accurate in details of space travel and useful to understand history of it. Story is base on true incident happened after moon landing Apollo 11 mission. There was a crisis in Apollo 13 mission that risked  life of astronauts and future of space travel. This film brings us realistic experience how brave and smart scientist at NASA overcame this situation.

            It also an award wining movie , directed by Ron Howard that released in 1995.

 

6 - 500 days of summer

             This is not movie about real story or base on real story .But it shows us an important part of our life. The life lesson that brings by this movie is important for developing young personalities . So I decided to include this film too because in order to experience world we need to understand life . Life is with always filled with love and sorrow. Not every love story is perfect and not everyone loves same as other. This movie captures that uncomfortable movements we have to face and gives us a experience of reality of life. So this also worth watching .

              This was directed by Marc Webb and released in 2009.

 

7 - Blood Diamond

                          This movie brings us an experience of Africa that is so remote to us in real world. During the civil war of Sierra Leone in 1991 to 2002  , people suffered from cruelty and brutal harassment of war loads. The film is growing around a diamond and conflict of a normal man trying to protect his family .

                          This also a eye opening experience that makes us rethink about lives of people lives in war zones. Film was directed by Edward Zwick and released on 2007.

                         

8 - Too big to fail

                  Although this is not a movie, its useful and important to understand financial system and how it works . This is a HBO tele series released in 2011 and base on a non-fiction book by Andrew Ross Sorkin . He discuss issues that lead to 2008 financial crisis and how wall street and Washington fought to save the financial system . This series leads us to understand how economy of the world work and how bad it would become .

                      Too big to fail was directed by Curtis Hanson and it also had received 11 nominations of Emmy awards.

 

9 - Seven Samurais

                     Seven Samurais is a great movie by a world greatest film maker Akira Kurosawa. It brings us a different experience from history of japan . Gathering of samurais trying to protect a village from cruel bandits is the main story . We can experience early Japanese culture in 1587  but film is not necessarily a real story . Even though it captures a heroic and excitements of samurai culture . So it also definitely worth watching .

                     Even it is initially released in 1954 the popularity of the movie is timeless . Can enjoy it even now.

 

10 - Children of Men

                    Children of men is different  from other movies in the list . It is a science fiction movie base on a book by P. D. James. Its about an extinction event of man kind due to infertility that goes though two decades. The movie cinematically shows situation that could be happen in future . Its a important movie discuss philosophical side of human natural  an it's contribution to world we live. In order to be a members of future world its important to understand what is it like to experience worst possibilities or future. An work together to illuminate these bad possibilities .

          Film was directed by famous director Alfonso Cuaron and released in 2006. It had won several awards is several film festivals including Venice film festival.
